Family Reunion.....Success

The family reunion was a great success. Everyone who attended seemed to have a wonderful time and look forward to next year. Check out the slide show I posted earlier today. The slide show consist of pictures from the reunion. Please if you took pictures email them to me so that I can add them.... We will keep the post going as long as possible, and it would help a great deal if you would post items throughout the year. I'll try to remind you from time to time in your email. That way we can keep up with each other. Thanks to all of you who came yesterday the cleanup was really appreciated. I don't know about you but I was exhausted..... Sorry it was warm, when we got there it was really cool.... I should have thought about bringing fans but lesson learned. Anyway, so next year with more people working on the reunion I bet it will go off absolutely perfect. Feel free to comment and have fun....

Not Long Now

Hey,

Well, it isn't long now..... did you notice the counter at the bottom of this blog? I just wanted to let you know that I am really excited that the blog is going over so well. We have actually had family members find it that we don't even know. Anyway, some of us have put together some trivia questions and as I have time I will post some on the blog for you to think about... no answers of course. Not until after the reunion... but they will be included on the dvd I'm putting together for you guys and hopefully there will be some things on there that you don't know and some things for your kids to find out about their family history.... If you can come up with any email them to me include the answers....and if I have time I will at least print them for the reunion. It is too late to include them on the dvd as currently I am working on timing and animation so the time to add pictures and trivia is over.

March Through Time

Time is a global phenomenon in which we all travel. It is categorized as past, present, and future. However, if you really think about it, the past is only memories, and with a tick of the clock, the future becomes the present, and the present becomes the past. It stands to reason that family reunions are focused on the past.

I was always told I was an only child, but I was never convinced. Read on and you'll see why. In 1914, Obe and Orene Hamiter had a baby girl and named her Mary Hattie (my mother). My Grandmother, Orene, died at 34 years of age, giving birth to her eleventh child, leaving one older and seven younger children behind for Mary Hattie to help raise--Lynn (Buddy), Clyde, Marvin, R. E., Ernest, Glenn, and her two "Special Treasures", Alma and John (Clarence), because they were still just babies. Since untimely death made these siblings her first children, their children seemed more like her grandchildren than her nieces and nephews.

Years later, I was born. I had a hard time understanding how I was an only child when my mother had already raised eight kids and had a whole passel of grandchildren (nieces and nephews), who were really my first cousins--Tim, Patsy, Ivey, Yvette, Glendon, Hilda and Margaret (step cousins), Bobbie, Carol Lynn, Obie, Raymond, Robert, Judie, Kay, Garry, Johnny, Connie, Reba, Debbie, and Jill (the youngest; but feistiest). All of this made me a very lucky only child. Because of twists of fate, some of these first cousins seem like my inherited brothers and sisters.

Now, I have a child of my own, Jordan, and the saga continues. He entered a family of great aunts--Alma, Glenn, Arlene, Nettie, Bonnie, Ria, and Gladys--and great uncles--Marvin, R. E., Earnest Covington, Ernest Hamiter, Jerry, Clarence, Buddy, and Clyde. However, Jordan also seems to have an Aunt Reba Jo; an Aunt Connie and Uncle Danny; an Aunt Judie and Uncle Dale; an Aunt Jill and Uncle Steve; an Aunt Debbie; and an Aunt Bobbie. A stranger to the Hamiter Clan would have trouble unraveling how Jordan, whose mother is an only child, ended up with all these aunts and uncles. But we understand.

Jordan may have all these aunts, uncles, and cousins, but there is only one Grandmother, Mary Hattie, and they love each other dearly. She is the oldest living descendant of Obe and Orene Hamiter.

Thanks to all of you for giving me this great-big wonderful family!

*Obe and Orene Hamiter had approximately 94 direct descendants; 84 of which are still living. What an amazing legacy!!!

The Zipper

A man walked into a supermarket with his zipper down. A lady cashier walked up to him and said “Your Barracks Door Is Open.” Not a phrase men normally use. He went on his way looking a bit puzzled.

When he was about done shopping, a man came up and said, “ Your fly is open.” He zipped up and finished his shopping. At the checkout, he intentionally got in the line where the lady was that told him about his “Barracks Door.” He was planning to have a little fun with her, so when he reached the counter he said, “ When you saw my barracks door open, did you see a marine standing in there at attention?”

The lady (naturally smarter than the man) thought for a moment and said,

No, No I didn’t. All I saw was a disabled veteran sitting on a couple of OLD DUFFLE BAGS.

Family

A Family is a blessing.
It means so many things
Words could never tell The joy a family brings.
A family is a bond of faith That even time can't sever.
A gift to last all of our lives.
A family is forever.

The Shoe Box

A man and woman had been married for more than 60 years. They had
shared everything. They had talked about everything. They had kept no secrets from each other, except that the little old woman had a shoe box in the top of her closet that she had cautioned her husband never to open or ask her about.

For all of these years, he had never thought about the box, but one
day the little old woman got very sick and the doctor said she would not recover.

In trying to sort out their affairs, the little old man took down the
shoe box and took it to his wife's bedside.

She agreed that it was time that he should know what was in the box.
When he opened it, he found two crocheted dolls and a stack of money totaling $95,000.

He asked her about the contents. 'When we were to be married,' she
said, 'my grandmother told me the secret of a happy marriage was to never argue. She told me that if I ever got angry with you, I should just keep quiet and crochet a doll.'

The little old man was so moved, he had to fight back tears. Only two
precious dolls were in the box. She had only been angry with him two times in all those years of living and loving. He almost burst with happiness.

'Honey,' he said, 'that explains the doll, but what about all of this
money? Where did it come from?'

'Oh,' she said, 'that's the money I made from selling the dolls.'

A Prayer.......

Dear Lord, I pray for Wisdom to understand my man; Love to forgive
him; And Patience for his moods; Because Lord, if I pray for Strength,

I'll beat him to death, because I don't know how to crochet.

COMPLIMENTS TO THE HAMITER FAMILY CHEF'S (past and present)

* Aunt Glenn * For absolutely the very best Pecan Pie and Chocolate Brownies. Chef Bobby Flay should have had a "Throw-Down" with her on her dessert preps. Bobby would have lost.

* My dear sister, Kay * Kay could cook about any meal, but her Shrimp entrees and oven cooked roasts (beef or pork) were out of this world!

* Aunt Hattie * For the best fresh peas and beans with salt pork and her pan fried "cold water" cornbread. If you haven't had her fried cornbread you are missing out! Also noted are her desserts of Blond Brownies and Chocolate Pies.

* Uncle R. E. * For his famous Barbecued Pork, on an open pit, with hands down the best sauce in the USA. Also for his Sugar Cane Syrup. Now Robert could have helped him, but I would think he would have had the late night shift of keeping the fire going.

* Aunt Alma * Our outdoor grilling Aunt. She knows more about grills than "Lowe's knows". She also makes wonderful desserts. But some of us eat to many desserts and if you spell "DESSERTS" backwards, you are "STRESSED". Among her desserts are: Banana Pudding and Coconut cake. Soothing, "get ya well", meals include Chicken & Dumplings. Her meals are no like Sandra Lee and her Simi-Homemade recipes. They are real meals from scratch.

* Uncle Clarence * I really think Aunt Alma taught him how to cook? But he makes the best Breakfast and fries the most delicious Pork Chops you have ever had.

* Aunt Arlene* For the very best Berry Cobblers, Cakes, and Coconut Pies. She is also noted for her "Debbie" beans.

* My mother, Gladys * What can you say about a person who had to prepare a minimum of twenty-four (24) meals a day. That's unless it wasn't the Sunday you had the Preacher and his family over for a meal. Mother made the best casseroles, especially her Chicken & Rice casseroles. She also cooked Pot Roasts, mouth watering Bean Soup, skillet Cream Corn, and Southern Fried Chicken.

* Aunt Nettie * I really never had a meal at her house that I can remember, but she would bring very good Pinto Beans and Fried Potatoes to the church for "Dinner-on-the Grounds". And as you know there is never anything left to take home...

* Aunt Bonnie * Now here is a lady that Paula Deen needs to take cooking lessons from. She prepares 5 Star Course Meals every day. And she can do all these meals by noon. At times, she uses her wood burning oven to get that aroma of real southern style cooking. It will really get those olfactory sense's going. Aunt Bonnie also makes great "Orange Peel" candy.

A Smart Way To Get Your Kids To Visit On Their Dollar!

JOKE

An elderly man in Phoenix calls his son Bob in New York and says, I hate to ruin your day, but your mother and I are divorcing. Forty-five years of misery is enough! I’m sick of her, and I’m sick of talking about this, so call your sister in Boston and tell her, and then hangs up. The son frantically calls his sister, who goes nuts upon hearing the news. She calls her father and yells, You are not getting a divorce! Bob and I will be there tomorrow. Until then, don’t do a single thing, do you hear me? The father hangs up the phone, turns to his wife, and says, It worked! The kids are coming for a visit, and they’re paying their own way!

Everyone Loved Uncle Roy

Lea Ann reminded me of a vacation we went on one year. It was me and Lea Ann , mama and daddy, Aunt Hattie and Uncle Roy and my grandma…. We all went to the Ozarks and camped at the Koa campground… we loved it up there Lea Ann and I would go swimming everyday which was absolutely the most fun. I even got to practice my life saving skills on her in the pool though she had to simulate drowning (I had to help her with that) (she didn’t like it either) and then I rescued her from the pool…we won’t go into that because I think she Is still mad at me over that one. Anyway, when it storms up there it storms and any of you that remember Uncle Roy really well should know that he loved to collect license plates from everywhere. He had a bunch of them. Well all of you also know that Aunt Hattie was always afraid of storms and did her best to make sure she would pull us out in the middle of them to run from them no matter what time of the night it was and it didn’t matter if we were heading straight at them as long as we were either at Uncle Clydes, Mama’s or Papa Obe’s. So you can get the picture at the end of the story Uncle Roy was in big trouble….Back to the camping trip….!!! One night it starts storming really bad. We had a cab over camper and Aunt Hattie and Uncle Roy had a pull tent camper. Lea Ann and I were sleeping with Aunt Hattie and Uncle Roy.. Well the storm comes up and we all evacuate to the cab over with mama and daddy and grandma…. All of us meaning me, Lea Ann and Aunt Hattie… well at first Aunt Hattie was freaking out over the storm (Uncle Roy wasn’t on her radar…) I mean the camper was rocking, the wind was howling and we thought we were going to blow away. Then she realized Uncle Roy wasn’t in there….. She was upset…. !!!!!
Aunt Hattie: I wonder where Roy is? I can’t believe he is out here wandering around in the middle of the storm! He’s gonna get killed!
We were all trying to figure out what he could be doing so we thought maybe he went to the camp ground office to the bathroom or something. So we waited a little while and then started looking out the windows for him….low and behold there was uncle Roy in the middle of the storm wandering around the camp ground looking for license plates. I’m pretty sure he even found one or two the storm blew up….I know he didn’t remove any from people’s cars while it was storming.. Uncle Roy was in the dog house over that one....
I can hear Aunt Hattie right now…. Royyyyyyy what are you doing.. don’t you know its storming out there you need to get in here Roy…….
Anyway, that was Uncle Roy…. I always wondered how he got so many license plates…….. Oh, and by the way, Uncle Roy was just as unconcerned about that storm as Aunt Hattie was freaking out….

Everyone loved Uncle Roy. I will always remember the love he gave me and how much he loved Andrea... Andrea has never forgotten Uncle Roy and never will till this day she still talks about him and I will always have memories that can never be taken away...... I know that he was always loved by all of us. He was a wonderful uncle and made a big impression in my life. I just wish Andrea could have had him in her life longer.

Tee Ball Meets Baseball

Well you know they always say that boys can get into a heap of trouble when left to their own devices? You could say that Jon and I (and sometimes Cory believe it or not) were the poster children for just such a statement. And as usual Jon ended up getting hit with the sharp end of the proverbial stick. It was no different than any typical summer afternoon with Jon and I we would usually find something to do whether it be swimming in the ditch if it had just rained or setting up the "Wet Banana" if it had not rained. Well we decided to pull out the tee ball stand, ball and metal bat to practice our hitting and catching for the upcoming season. Soooooo we go into the garage and start pulling everything out and getting it set up. I can't remember the exact sequence of events but seem to think that Jon started out catching and I started out hitting. So Jon gets out in the yard and I get the bat ready. I rare back and swing and you know it is amazing how bad things always happen in slow motion weird isn't it. I see the ball which is travelling quite fast on a line drive for Jon's face. The next thing I hear is this loud crack and it struck him in the mouth. I have to admit Jon even though it had to hurt very badly wasn't to phased by it so we start trying to cover our tracks. See we had pulled out a baseball instead of a tee ball which if you have seen the 2 one is rock hard (the baseball) and the other is more spongy (the teeball). So we commence to hiding the baseball in the flower garden and then we go to Maw Jo since Jon is hurt. Well they start inspecting him for any missing teeth etc (luckily there were no missing teeth) and that is when Jon reached in and noticed his cheek was bleeding quite badly on the inside of his mouth. This is the point in which the screaming began. First thing Uncle Obie said was you boys were using the baseball weren't you? Yeah well guilty as charged it is amazing he always knew what we had done immediately after we had done it.

The Day We Found Out We Got Jon Jon

The day the adoption agency called I was up at Aunt Alma' House. Mrs. Hamiter called and told me they were trying to reach Obie and I, and I needed to go home.

Everyone went to my House---Aunt Alam, Jill, Tracy and Mrs. Pat Davis.

The phone rang and Col. Sparks told me they had us a baby boy. I repeated what they said and everyone was screaming and crying-----especially Jill! I told her we couldn't come till the next day because Obie was on a run to Odessa, Texas(in the 18 wheeler). She said that was fine let her know when he would return and we could pick our little boy up when he returned.
Jill and Tracy decided to spend the night with me and wait for Obie to call!
The phone rang at 10 that night and Jill and Tracy went wild! I made them go to the other room so I could tell Obie by myself. They minded, just out side the door!
I told Obie that VOA had called and we had a little boy but would wait
till he returned to pick him up. Obie did not believe me until Jill
and Tracy came SCREAMING into the room "IT's A BOY! Obie it is true
at the top of their lungs and he believed me and the rest is history!

Notable Quote

Quote from Mike Rachal, Valley Electric/Retired

"R. E. Hamiter could get the most out of his workcrew and accomplish more than any person in the world".

by Johnny Hamiter

I am bound to them,
though I cannot
look into their eyes
or hear their voices.
I honor their history,
I cherish their lives.
I will tell their story.

Whether a family is bound together or scattered far apart,
Loved ones from the past and present are always in our heart.
Legacies of love and pride are passed down through the years,
Journals kept of triumphs, tragedies, and tears.
Tales of great joy, sacrifice, and sorrow can be found,
Character traits, personalities, and likenesses abound.
Families give us history; roots tied to our past
And a heritage that’s honored is one that’s sure to last!

It's time to love each other!

Remember the best!

A Birthday Present

When Jill was a little girl before she started school she loved her Uncle Clyde and on his birthday she gathered up her entire savings of pennies and got one of Jerry’s socks and put them in it. Then she took it and gave it to Clyde for his birthday. He was tickled to death with his birthday present and put the sock and pennies in his cedar chest to save. I have always wondered what happened to that present.

How Hot Was It???

We take for granted these days of having air-conditioned homes and cars, but did you know that Plain Dealing, Louisiana recorded the state's hottest temperature ever, 114 degrees, on August 10, 1936.

Growing up having known two Grandparents

Most kids grow up, if they are lucky, knowing four Grandparents. That being the fathers and mothers of their fathers and mothers. But in my case, as a child growing up in the 50's and 60's, I only had two Grandparents "Mama and Papa" Hamiter.

Now this was way before my time, born 8 March 1951, but for those of you that may not know this is the way it progressed. My dad, Clyde L. Hamiter, met and married my mother, Gladys C. Staggs. My dads Mother and my mothers Dad had passed away. After my parents marriage my fathers father ,"Papa" Obe Hamiter, married my mother's mother, "Mama" Mrs. Staggs. And that my cousins is the way it was. That kind of puts another spin on "Go ask you Mother, Mama, Papa or your Daddy" for permission to???.......... John "J.D." Hamiter

Funny Story Number 1

I have the funniest story though my mama might not agree... but Uncle Clyde and I got tickled about this for years...All of you know mama had cows, and when I was a young girl about eight years old; Mama had a cow that was laying down in the pasture. She thought the cow was having a calf so Mama, Uncle Clyde and I went to check on it. We didn't want to upset the cow so Uncle Clyde and I stayed on the hill above the pond while she went down to take a look. We didn't think much about it and mama was never afraid of anything so it never even dawned on her or us that something else might be going on with the cow. Uncle Clyde and I were not paying too much attention and the next thing you know mama is just a screaming and yelling for help and Uncle Clyde and I looked up and she was running as fast as her short little legs would let her.... I promise you I have never ever seen her run so fast in my entire life, as a matter of fact, I think that is the only time I ever saw her run... She was running up the levy and heading for the pond with the cow right behind her chasing her trying to butt her...and it was not having a calf. Please picture that in your mind! Mama is heading up the levy and the cows heading up the levy... So, Uncle Clyde and I started running too and not toward her but we were still watching. Mama finally made it up the levy and was getting ready to jump in the pond (like that would have stopped the cow) and the next thing you know which was lucky for her but not the cow, the cow crumbled on the levy and died. OK, the funny part wasn't the cow dying foaming at the mouth but if you could have just seen her running like that and us running. Oh well, if you are not chuckling picturing all of that I still am. She was so mad at me and Uncle Clyde and just couldn't get over us running the other way but.... I guess we were not much help... Jill

Hamiter Family Reunion 2008

Dear Family,

This blog is being created for the First Hamiter Family Reunion in over twenty years. The last reunion being at Glendon's. It doesn't seem like that long does it? I'm really excited and I know some of you are as well. It occurred to me to create a blog and email the address to all of you, give you the password, and if you want you can go in and write an amusing story or a memory that you would like to share with us. I have so many; I could write forever but that would be rather boring for you..... Please be sure you sign your name at the end of your post and whatever you do, don't change the password that would not be cool..... OK!!!!!! Please don't be shy and if I can figure this out I will go in and print them and we can share at the reunion. Oh yeah, please if you have any ideas for activities could you work them up for the reunion. Don't forget, you can comment on any of the post so if there is something you would like to add go ahead and lets have fun.
